Nutrition Counseling Practices And Psychological Counseling

Nutrition counseling is a combination of nutrition science expertise and psychological counseling skill (Snetselaar, 2009). Current nutrition counseling practices have expanded from an initial, brief hospital encounter that provides education into a more in-depth counseling discovery of dietary changes related to an individual’s personal situation and emotions through links of nutrition science, psychology and physiology. â€Å"Clients approach nutrition counseling sessions with mindsets about themselves and the world around them† (Snetselaar, 2009). With much of nutrition counseling focused on encouraging behavior change, strong facilitative skills are a valuable asset to a nutrition counselor. Other positive qualities of effective nutrition counselors include professional aspects such as knowledge of counseling theories and strategies paired with the personal qualities of a non-judgmental attitude, objective open-mindedness, and flexibility. Many human development theories influence the way that nutrition counseling is conducted. Behavior modification, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), rational-emotive therapy (RET), social learning theory, standard behavioral therapy, transtheoretical model, person-centered therapy, Gestalt therapy, family therapy, self-management approach, the health belief model, and developing skills training are examples of behavioral theories utilized in nutrition counseling.
